Saturday Is Stiles Thomas Day

Stiles Thomas JWOn Saturday, June 17, Allendale is honoring the memory of Stiles Thomas, human extraordinaire. There's an official borough proclamation making Saturday "Stiles Thomas Day," a remembrance in the Celery Farm Nature Preserve at 11 a.m. and a celebration at the nearby historic Fell House from 3 to 5 p.m.

At 11 a.m.,
the Fyke Nature Association is having a remembrance/memorial service at the Lopez Bench, east of Phair's Pond. Meet at the Green Way entrance. Please bring your own chair if you need one.

From 3 to 5 p.m. at the event at the Fell House, You can help remember Stiles by telling a (brief) story about Siles, sharing one of his jokes, or participating in a yodeling contest.

We’re planning to have a slide show featuring Stiles and his friends and family, plus a display of some of his carvings and his boxing gear.

We’ll supply some snacks but please bring your own beverage.

If you have a digital photo of Stiles you’d like to include in the slide show, email it to [email protected]. If you have one of Stiles’ carvings, bring it!

Do Not Move Turtles Beyond the Road!

Got a call from a birder today who said she ran into a couple who were releasing an Eastern Box Turtle in the Celery Farm.  They had rescued it when it was crossing a road in Pearl River.

While the people meant well, turtles should never be transported anywhere and released because, as the Think Turtle Conservation Initiative website advises:

"We love that folks care about the turtles but when it comes to moving turtles it is important to not move turtles any further than across the road and a safe distance away from the road in the direction the turtle was headed.

"Relocating a turtle to a wetlands 10 km from where the turtle was situated or to a friend's pond without meaning to can turn a turtle's world upside down. Turtles are creatures of habit and do not cope well with being relocated.

"A turtle that has been relocated will be stressed and at such a disadvantage in a new environment. They have to find food and water and negotiate their way in an unfamiliar territory. Turtles unable to find their way home may stop eating, fall ill and even die."
