Monday Mystery Re-mystified

IMG_9224 (1)
Last week, the Monday Mystery featured a little gray critter. One reader said it was a mole, and I concurred.

Now another reader has challenged that answer, and I think she's right.

So, what is it? (My apologies for lacking a quarter to put next to it for scale.)

Save the Dates: Butterfly Day, Moth Night

High Mountain Black SwallowtailButterfly Walk
at the Celery Farm

The Fyke Nature Association’s annual Celery Farm Butterfly Walk is held in memory of Tom Burr, the late Fyke member, naturalist, photographer, and friend. Meet at the end of Green Way at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, for a 90-minute stroll. Here is the Google Map location. Dress for bright sun. Bring water and sunscreen. For Fyke members and their families. Rain cancels this walk. To register, email Jim Wright at [email protected].

Moths & Movie Monday
at the John Fell House

Monday, July 24, is Allendale's 11th anniversary Moth Night, from 7:30 to 10 p.m.  The John Fell House, the Fyke Nature Association, and Lee Memorial Library are celebrating at the historic home on Franklin Turnpike. Elena Tartaglia, a biology professor at Bergen Community College and a National Moth Week founder, will do a short talk at 7:45 p.m. and supply the moth lights.

We will also show "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-out Attack" outside on the library's outdoor movie projector and movie screen to see if any real-live moths are attracted to the cinematic Mothra. We might even try to serve s'mores (but not s'moths) if everyone behaves. Bring your own non-aerosol mosquito spray and water. Rain date is Tuesday, July 25. Ends at 10 p.m. To register, email Jim Wright at [email protected].

These programs are brought to you thanks to a generous grant from the Winifred M. and George P. Pitkin Foundation.

Monday Mysteries Answered

On Monday I asked:

Saw this dead critter and this cool plant on the Palisades last week. What are they?

Congrats to Diane Louie, who answered: "Mole and Salsify."

Salsify might be the only plant with a name that sounds like a verb. Or not.

Tree Trunk Removed from Stream

A dead tree trunk in the Celery Farm fell into the stream by the bridge near the Warden's Watch this spring, and it would have greatly exacerbated flooding when we get a heavy rainstorm (sooner or later).

The Borough of Allendale hired Sav-a-Tree remove the huge tree trunk, and the Sav-a-Tree team arrived this morning and made quick work of it.

Thank you, Borough of Allendale and Sav-a-Tree.
