A resident living near a local Red-shoulder nest has been finding headless snakes in her yard.

Can you I.D. the snakes and explain what happened?

(Last week I saw a Red-shoulder fly out of the Celery Farm with a snake in tow.)

Turtle Crossing Sign Is Up

Please look out for turtles of all sizes as you drive along the Franklin Turnpike and elsewhere in town.

Beware: Turtles Crossing Franklin Tpke

The annual turtles crossing the road by the Celery Farm to lay their eggs has begun once again.

Please drive extra-carefully along the Franklin Turnpike and be prepared to stop.

A big thank you to all the drivers who stopped to let this guy cross the Franklin Turnpike around 11 a.m.

She was about the size of a small dinner plate. She took a break in this tall grass.

The Allendale Police Department plans to put up a warning sign tomorrow. (Thank you, Allendale PD!)

Friday's Zoom Talk: Moths through the Seasons with Wade Wander, 8 p.m.

Though they share the same order of Lepidoptera, moths have long played second fiddle to butterflies. But of the nearly 180,000 species in that order, fewer than 20,000 are butterflies and skippers.

The rest of the 150,000-plus species are moths. And in New Jersey, it’s estimated there are more than 1,500 species of moths compared to about 125 species of butterflies.

Join Wade Wander as he offers up a chronological look at the amazing diversity of moths that he has photographed at his moth lights at home in Sussex County.

Wade, along with his wife, Sharon, is a partner in Wander Ecological Consultants, investigating wetlands and conducting surveys for Endangered and Threatened species.

He has been an active New Jersey naturalist since childhood, interested in birds, reptiles and amphibians, plants, and butterflies (and of course, moths and other insects). He is a past president of the New Jersey Butterfly Club, for which he is a frequent speaker and field-trip leader.

At the moth station he runs at their home in Sussex County, Wade has recorded more than 1100 species of moths since 2001.

Directions to The Fell House
Look for white house with pillars, white barn, on west side of Franklin Turnpike, just north of Cottage Place.
Directions to Green Way entrance to the Celery Farm
Green Way is off the Franklin Turnpike, the second right heading north after the Celery Farm parking lot on the Franklin Turnpike. Parking is in the cul de sac. This is a residential street, so please drive and park considerately. Please do not block the large gates leading into the Celery Farm, and please park parallel to the curb.
Directions To Celery Farm Main Parking Lot
Parking lot is on your right, north of Cottage Place, past three houses. Please do not park on the sidewalk -- it is illegal, by state law. You could damage the sidewalk, make it dangerous for pedestrians, and receive a ticket. (Pass the word if you see anyone parking on thes sidewalk.)
