The Zoom Show about the Celery Farm

Two decades ago, Jerry Barrack and I joined forces to create "In the Presence of Nature," better known as simply "The Celery Farm Book." I wrote the text, and Jerry provided the photos. Doug Goodell contributed as well.

Above is a YouTube video of the recent Zoom presentation Jerry and I did for the Fyke Nature Association  -- highlighting what's changed and what has remained the same (including a classic photo from the old Hour on the Tower, above).

Lots of great photos about the Celery Farm in the good old days.

Since mid-2015, Fyke's monthly speaker presentations have been funded by a generous grant from the Winifred M. and George P. Pitkin Foundation.

Next Thursday: Exciting Wild Turducken News

Alice Leurck Turducken photo 7W0A8790 (2) copy1bAfter much research and legwork, I am pleased to let you know that major news regarding the Wild Turduckens of High Mountain will be announced next Thursday via the Montclair Bird Club.

Stay tuned.

(Rare photo of Wild Turducken -- the blur on the left -- by Alice Leurck is above. Thanks, Alice! Everyone knows how tough these fast-moving fowl are to photograph.)

Don Torino & BCAS To Be Honored

Don-torinoFlat Rock Brook Nature Association President Stephen Wiessner writes:

Don Torino and Bergen County Audubon Society are being honored by Flat Rock Brook Nature Association at our 2021 Virtual Gala on Earth Day, April 22.

Don and Audubon will be presented with our Conservation Hero Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to our preserve. Audubon has been a friend in supporting land work on the preserve. Don is an ambassador for those contributions and also presents public programs for us. His presentations engage our attendees in the natural world and their power to protect it.

Since 1973, Flat Rock Brook has played an important role in our community by preserving 150 acres of woodlands and streams and delivering quality environmental education programs. Our 3.6 miles of forested hiking trails are enjoyed by more than 75,000 annual recreational visitors and environmental education participants. Our education programs serve students and adults.

The Gala website https://tinyurl.com/FRBGala2021 has more information, including the opportunity to support our event with a sponsorship, Gala Journal ad or donation to salute Don and Audubon and to assist Flat Rock’s preservation and education work.

Sincerely,

Way to go, Don and BCAS! Congrats.

Can You I.D. These Hour on the Towerites?

Screen Shot 2021-03-22 at 8.42.11 PMThis photo from the Celery Farm book was likely taken at the turn of the century, when the Hour on the Tower was always held at the Warden's Watch.

How many people can you identify? What was the duck's name?

Jerry Barrack and I will identify as many folks as we can at our free Zoom talk on Friday.
