Birdy 30 Results Are Here!

1-IMG_0563
The Superstorm Stella Birdy 30 results are in, and I am pleased to announce the winners. Boy, was it close.

In all, at least 18 people submitted one or more lists. (Thanks, all!)

The Blue-footed Booby Prize goes to Tom Nicastri, because 1-IMG_2669I needed an excuse to use the Galapagos photo at right again. Tom had a grand total of two birds.

Because Tom's birds were turkey and chicken, we are thinking Tom was looking into his fridge instead of out his window, falling just one entree short of  the vaunted separate Turducken trifecta.

Bird of the Day honors went Rob Fanning, who apparently released the Red-breasted Nuthatch he had kept in his garage all winter  just in time for this prestigious event.

The other bird of the day was the Fox Sparrow, which appeared on many lists because of a current influx. (Very cool.)

I am posting another pic of the American Woodcock I saw during the Birdy 30, above, because I needed an excuse. He has not returned. The music video the woodcock dancing is here.

Le Prize Grande goes to David Kaplan, with an impressive list of 19 birds.

Close behind were other perennial all-stars Stiles Thomas (18), Ravi Potluri (18) and Betty McDonnell (17).

Congrats, all!  If I overlooked or messed up anybody's high score, holler.

Dave's winning list follows, along with Stephanie Seymour's photo of a Fox Sparrow, Tree Sparrow and a Dark-eyed Junco that photo-bombed the picture.

Grand Canyon Part VII: One Last Mystery

1-DSCN0313Saw this outside of Sedona. Could not decide if this was from a Javelina or a color-blind Leprechaun.

Can you help?  You have to admit it's strange. Colorful, but strange.

Patty's brother Thom asked if  I would post some photos from trip, so the past seven Grand Canyon posts are his fault.

You will be relieved to hear that this concludes the Grand Canyon segment of this blog. I promise.

This is as high as I can count in Roman numerals.

Send Me Your Birdy 30 Totals by 6 p.m.

Have had a great response to the Birdy 30 event, and hope to post the results tomorrow (Thursday) morning. To be included in the tally, please send me your totals by 6 p.m. today.

Above is a photo taken by Marianne Herrmann during her Birdy 30. I think it captures the snowy-day feeding frenzies many of us saw yesterday at our feeders at one time or another. (Thanks, Marianne!)

Woodcock Dancing in the Snow (Video)

(Reposted with music and more info)

The American Woodcock I accidentally flushed during Tuesday morning's snow returned later in the day and put on a show. I shot this from the window -- have never seen one from our window overlooking the Celery Farm before.

The video is only 14-15 seconds, so watch away!

I tried to add music, which has since magically appeared. I believe it is called "Hot Swing," by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com).

The woodcock hung around for much of the day. Gotta love that walk (dance?).
