Remembering Jim Longo

DSCN9934
The funeral for Franklin Lakes historian Jim Longo is today, and I just wanted to share a few words to mark his passing.

When I began researching High Mountain last year, Jim was a great resource.

IMG_9991-001Jim gave me a tour of one of his favorite places, the Franklin Clove, explaining its long and incredible history.

He showed me nearby Buttermilk Falls and also told me where I could find an old map of the falls and surrounding area.

Jim shared a wonderful video of the history of the clove that he had created with one of his daughters.

In the process, Jim helped remind me that history is integral to natural history, and that we are nowhere without a sense of place. Great teacher, great guy.

Franklin Clove has always seemed hallowed to me -- now even more so.
