Next Celery Farm Wardens' Walk: Saturday Sept.5

DSCN9888-001
The Fyke Nature Association is offering a free guided walk at the Celery Farm in Allendale on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 8 a.m.

The walk, led by Marsh Warden Mike Limatola and Deputy Warden Jim Wright, is for nature-lovers of all ages and birders of all levels.

We'll look for butterflies, bugs, weird plants and our feathered friends. We meet at the end of Green Way on the north end of the CF off Franklin Turnpike.

E-mail Jim Wright at celeryfarm (at) gmail.com if you plan to attend. Check celeryfarm.net for updates.

Monday Morning Mystery 082415

Ginny Chucka writes:IMG_4094%20(2)

Spotted this bird deep in the woods of West Milford/Clinton Reservoir area yesterday.

I see blue feet and a nice strip on its eye... My bird book's coming up with a Black-whiskered Vireo, but it's not found in this area...

Any ideas?

Thanks, Ginny!

Lucky Horseshoe Found in the Celery Farm

IMG_9812Elena Tartaglia, the National Moth Week whiz who teaches at Bergen Community College, did some stream sampling with two of her students by the Brotherton Bridge on Friday.

Full post next week.  In the meantime, wanted to post one of the items they found in the stream -- a horseshoe.

We placed it against a tree (above) so it would stand out against the lighter background. In horseshoe parlance, this is known as a leaner.

I called Marsh Warden Stiles Thomas about the horseshoe, and he pointed out that there once was a horse pasture not far away from there -- a blast from the past.
