New Year's Eve Red-tail

IMG_0103__12-31-14_WM(1)Bob Leafe writes:

Right after lunch today, I happened to look out of my living room window, noticed this little red-tail in a very nearby tree about a floor below me and zoomed right in ...a nice way to end the year.

I hope the next one is great for everyone.

Me, too!

Here's to a healthy, happy 2015.

Shots Fired at Old Paramus Church

DSCN9891
The Record published an article yesterday about shots being fired at the Old Paramus Reformed Church just off Route 17.

The story, by John Seasly, also includes a great history lesson about its role in the Revolutionary War. Here's a sample:

"The church grounds occupy a prominent place in Bergen County’s Revolutionary era history: More than two centuries ago, many more shots were fired on the site as British and American forces clashed in bloody combat. The article is here."

Seasly's article cites an essay from "Revolutionary Bergen County," edited by Barbara Z. Marchant, by John U. Rees. In that essay, Rees mentions that several local militia led by Major Peter Fell [son of John Fell] helped push back the British.

The link is here.

A nice little local history lesson.

No-sho Photo by Sally Teschon, taken today. (Thanks, Sally!)

Are you up for a friendly Celery Farm Big Year Contest for 2015?

The goals are to have fun -- while keeping things simple.

Participants can count any bird seen in or from the Celery Farm or nearby John Fell House (in order to promote both of these treasures, which were originally part of the same property).

I propose two divisions, individual and team of two (Patty and I plan to compete as a team, for example), with awards for top individual, top team, and a prize winner drawn at random to encourage all birders to participate, not just our ace birders.

You can enter as an individual or as a two-person team. Teams can only count birds seen while birding together.

Honor system, but maybe at least two witnesses or a definitive photo for any bird never seen before at the Celery Farm/Fell House. The burden of proof is on the observer. :- )

I'll post quarterly standings on this blog if it's not too time-consuming or complicated ...

Just e-mail me at [email protected] by Jan. 31 if you are participating (if you haven't already). Please put "Celery Farm Big Year" in the msg field.

See you at the Farm in 2015.
