My Latest Column: Wild Turkeys
November 20, 2014
My latest column for The Record and Herald News is about the increase in Wild Turkeys in our region -- and why you'll be seeing them in flocks during the winter months.
The column features an interview with Tony McBride of the state's Divison of Fish and Wildlife.

Age-old Question: Sharpie or Coop?
November 17, 2014
Saw this accipiter in the Celery Farm in dim light yesterday.
Notched tail sort of said "Sharp-shinned Hawk" at the time but its size and shape say "Cooper's Hawk." So I am going with "Coop."
What do you say?
A Banner Migration for Red-shoulders
November 15, 2014
Marsh Warden Emeritus Stiles Thomas is going to State Line Lookout today in hopes of catching part of the Red-shouldered Hawk Migration.
This fall has been a good one for this once-thriving hawk. The Quaker Ridge Hawk Watch in Greenwich, Connecticut, has logged at least three days of more than 100 migrating Red-shoulders, with 126 on Halloween and well over 800 for the season.
State Line logged 45 on Thursday and 26 yesterday, and Montclair had 71 on Thursday.
Allendale, of course, has its own Red-shoulder nest near the Celery Farm. Red-shouldered Hawks are endangered in New Jersey when nesting.
More about the Wave Hill Bird Walk
November 14, 2014
Gabriel Willow of NYC Audubon posted a writeup of Sunday's Wave Hill bird walks on the Wave Hill blog, and was nice enough to use a few of my photos from the morning walk.
Wave Hill is having a Birding Boot Camp tomorrow (Saturday) from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
