NJCF Video on the Celery Farm

I just saw that the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, the group instrumental in saving the Celery Farm, has edited their larger video about land preservation in New Jersey so that there's also a stand-alone video on the Celery Farm.

Michele Byers of the NJCF interviewed Stiles Thomas and me last spring for the video.  I think NJCF did a really nice job -- I hope you agree.

(If you click the button in the lower right-hand corner of the video, you'll see the video full-screen -- it's well worth it.)

Today's Soggy Celery Farm Walk

DSCN0111-001

We've had better weather for walks, but this morning's nature walk with Fyke and Bergen County Audubon was cool, and we sure need the rain.

Four of us, slightly waterlogged, DSCN0106-001did a quick walk.

We did not see any all-white catbrds, but we did see 22 species, including Osprey, Sharp-shinned Hawk, and nine Wild Turkeys (grazing on a nearby lawn, above).

(Thanks to our diehard participants!)

Full list follows.

New NJCF Video Features Celery Farm

The New Jersey Conservation Foundation, the folks who were instrumental in helping Allendale save the Celery Farm Natural Area, did a recent video on their land-preservation efforts statewide.

They were kind enough to feature the Celery Farm, Stiles Thomas, and me in the video. That segment starts at 11:35, but best to watch the whole thing.

If you click the button in the lower right-hand corner of the video, you'll see the video full-screen -- it's well worth it.  The NJCF has done New Jersey proud.

(Thanks, NJCF!)

Celery Farm Walk Advisory

Because of the unpredictability of weather forecasting, we plan to go ahead with the Celery Farm walk at 8 a.m. Saturday, but be aware -- the forecast as of noon Friday calls for a 70 percent chance of thunderstorms on Saturday morning.

Lightning or thunder cancels the walk.

The walk meets at the Green Way entrance to the Celery Farm. Green Way is off the Franklin Turnpike, the second right heading north after the Celery Farm parking lot on the Franklin Turnpike. Parking is in the cul de sac. This is a residential street, so please drive and park considerately. Please do not block the large gates leading into the Celery Farm, and please park parallel to the curb.

Google map directions are also in the right-hand column of this blog.

Questions: please call Jim Wright at 201-469-7349 on Saturday morning.

Fingers crossed!

Rob led a walk at the Celery Farm on Sunday for NJAS, and one of the participants came across two of these interesting caterpillars (above). I had them IDd as Brown Hooded Owlet Moth Caterpillar.Brown owlet moth

On the right is what it will look like if it survives till mothhood.

The Moth Photographers Group has a neat page about this moth.
