Ivan's Big Walk

Starting on November 8, long-time Fyke member Ivan Kossak will walk the East Coast Greenway section that passes through New Jersey. The Greenway is an urban and suburban walking trail that stretches from Maine to Key West Florida. The section in New Jersey runs about 100 miles from the George Washington Bridge to Trenton.

Ivan is doing the walk as a fund raiser for Hackensack Riverkeeper, Free Walkers (a charity that promotes walking as recreation and exercise), and the Greenway itself.

John Fell Wants You!

DSCN9068-002
John Fell Wants You  ... to attend Jim Wright's talk about Allendale's Founding Father John Fell's historic house, and Fell's swamp, now known as the Celery Farm.

The talk and accompanying slde show are part of the Coalition of Northwest Bergen Historical Organizations' annual fund-raising luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 29. The event will be held at the Ramsey Country Club from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Jim will explain the unsung John Fell’s heroic role in the Revolutionary War and discuss the house that bears his name and the swamp that he owned --  the 107-acre Celery Farm.

As a Halloween bonus, Jim Wright will read his ghost story "Phantoms of the Ramapos" out-loud. P1210820AJ-001

The tale, set in 1938, features the Ho-Ho-Kus Speedway, an armed bank robbery in Allendale, and a cameo appearance by the Darlington Schoolhouse in Mahwah.

(You can download a free digital version of the book by clicking on the left-hand side of this blog.)

A slide show featuring archival photos will illustrate the talk and ghost story.

If Jim Wright cannot appear, the spirit of John Fell himself may give the talk.
