First Photos of David the Hawk!

Hawk, RS David with small snack for nest cf 42712DSC_0260_crop

Barbara Dilger was kind enough to send along these nifty shots of David the Red-shouldered Hawk, Laura's mate.

To my knowledge, these are the first photos of the male hawk since Stiles dubbed him "David."

Barbara writes:

"I went to see the nest Friday and could only see the tail of Laura keeping the baby or babies warm.  So I went over to the CF and got to see the Swallow show and as I was watching the Swallows at the Warden's Watch, I saw David heading over the lake toward the nest with a snack.
" So, I rushed back to the nest to see Laura feeding her young, though I could not see the little ones sitting so deep in the cozy nest."

(Thanks, Barbara!) More pix follow.

Free Celery Farm Walk This Saturday!

P1000172 Marsh Warden Mike Limatola and I are doing our first-Saturday-of-month walks again this spring -- on May 5 and June 2 at 8 a.m. The walk will be followed by an optional half-hour tour of the historic Fell House nearby.

In the Celery Farm, we'll be looking for all sorts of spring arrivals, plus herons, egrets and hawks (and butterflies). We'll have a spotting scope or two, but bring binoculars if you have them.

Note: We suggest wearing long sleeves, long pants, socks and shoes to reduce the chances of ticks.

The 90-minute walk, open to nature lovers of all ages and abilities, are designed to acquaint more people with the 107-acre Celery Farm  -- and the 250-year-old Fell House.

The walks begin at the end of Green Way (a right turn off of northbound Franklin Turnpike, just before Crescent Avenue).  (Directions are in the left-hand column.)

The walks are sponsored by the Fyke Nature Association, which helps maintain the Celery Farm, and the Concerned Citizens of Allendale, which saved the Fell House and its 2.8-acre property from becoming a townhouse development.

E-mail Jim Wright here to rsvp or get more info. Check this blog, celeryfarm.net, for updates and directions to the Celery Farm, Green Way and the Fell House.

We hope to see you on May 5.
